Winter Weather Preparedness

Winter Weather is Coming, Prepare Your Team

Published On: December 19, 2023

Winter is coming – on Thursday, Dec. 21 in fact – and John Salmon, CHST, 35 North’s safety manager, wants to ensure all construction services teams have winter weather safety top of mind.

Below are a few tips to help you get started as you check your plan and prepare as needed, beyond just monitoring the weather forecast.

Education:
■ Ensure all workers understand the symptoms of trench foot, hypothermia, and frostbite and when to call for immediate medical treatment

Inspections:
■ Before work begins, supervisors should inspect sites daily to spot potential hazards such as ice accumulation and downed powerlines or trees
■ When the forecast calls for it, plan ahead for snow or ice removal activities as it relates to rooftops and other areas

Proper Gear:
■ Ensure all project teams wear proper cold-weather clothing and PPE (according to weather and duration of activity) such as:
▫ Properly textured, waterproof gloves to keep hands warm while providing manual dexterity to work with tools, grip ladders, etc.
▫ Waterproof boots with non-slip soles and thick socks
▫ Have anti-fog spray on hand for safety glasses and wool caps
▫ Dress in layers with an insulating, moisture-wicking base and waterproof outer layer
▫ Have extra clothing handy in case yours gets wet

Safe Work Practices
■ Shelter in heated break areas: more than just snow, cold and windy conditions can be brutal on a jobsite and exposure should be limited – take breaks from harsh elements in a warm, sheltered area
■ Warm liquids are good but limit caffeine and absolutely no alcohol
■ Keep emergency kits in work vehicles, including winter weather emergency items
