Building Beyond the Jobsite: Volunteering with Durham Technical Community College

Published On: October 30, 2026

Building the future of the skilled trades starts with investing in the people who will shape it.

35 North recently had the opportunity to support Durham Technical Community College as it prepares students for careers in the electrical trade. Four members of our team, Mike Lutz, Amy Kiser, Caitlin Langley, and Kellie McKiernan, rolled up their sleeves and volunteered their time on a Saturday to construct a hands-on training wall for the college’s new electrical trades class.

Designed to mirror tasks electricians encounter in the field, the mock-up gives students a place to practice essential techniques, work with electrical components, and become familiar with the requirements of the National Electrical Code (NEC). It is a practical addition to the classroom that helps connect what students learn in theory with the work they will eventually perform on the job.

For us, supporting the next generation goes beyond the projects we build. It also means sharing our knowledge, strengthening our communities, and helping create opportunities for future construction professionals to grow their skills and confidence.

We are proud of our team for contributing to this effort and thankful to Durham Tech for the opportunity to be involved. Today’s students are tomorrow’s skilled trades professionals, and we are excited to see where their careers take them!
