Medstar Georgetown University Hospital

Main Hospital Emergency Power System

WASHINGTON, DC

This project consists of a five building electrical upgrade project for the emergency power distribution of medium and low voltage systems that include the Main Hospital and Loading Dock area, the Comprehensive Care Center, the Lombardi Comprehensive Care Center, the Pasquerilla Healthcare Center, and the Bles/Gorman Building.

The major renovations occur at the Main Hospital where a new structure is built at the existing loading dock that will house the new medium voltage generators and medium voltage paralleling switchgear. A concrete steel reinforced slab will be poured over the repaired and modified concrete floor and extend over the existing grade beams to distribute the additional load from the generators. A new steel structure and roof is provided with roof drains that tie into the
existing rain water system.  The emergency power generation will include three 4160 volt, 1.5 megawatt diesel generators with 200 gallon day tanks with an intake and exhaust system to support each generator. A new 4160 volt emergency paralleling switchgear is provided near the generators in the new electrical room. The generators will have a single underground 25,000 gallon diesel fuel tank located below grade in front of the new generator building.

New HVAC air side equipment, exhaust fans, ductwork, louvers and piping are provided in the new structure that is stand alone and independent of the existing hospital HVAC system. The low voltage power and lighting will be upgraded and two new electrical panels will replace existing and be relocated to the new electrical room. The fire alarm detection system will be upgraded for the new area. A new wet fire protection is included inside the structure and a dry system is included in the two covered breezeways adjacent to the new structure. New Voice and Data outlets will be provided in the new rooms that tie into the existing telecommunications equipment.
