Randall Library Advance Planning

WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA

The advance planning study for the William Madison Randall Library located on UNCW’s campus explored a phased renovation, as well as an addition to the existing building. Scope included exhibition spaces for digital research displays, a technology suite to produce digital media, and new technology-enabled meeting and collaboration spaces.

35 North provided three cost models to be presented to and evaluated by the library leadership team and university:

  1. An 18,000-square-foot addition for a new automated retrieval system (ARS) to house the collections and free-up space in the existing library for additional user space.
  2. A 25,000-square-foot addition to meet the revised program with new construction and a less-intensive renovation of the existing library.
  3.  A 40,000-square-foot addition allowing for more new construction and more modest renovation of the existing library.

At the end of the advance planning stage, the University proceeded with a renovation and new building addition. The new building increased the library’s student usability, providing the campus with an events space with an adjacent exhibit area, a new data Visualization and Analysis Lab, an enhanced and enlarged makerspace, as well as a recording studio and virtual reality space.
