Visitor Center and Underwater Archaeological Building at Fort Fisher State Historic Site

KURE BEACH, NORTH CAROLINA

Fort Fisher became North Carolina’s first National Historic Landmark in 1961. In 2021, the center welcomed over one million annual visitors. To meet the needs of both its staff and the ever-increasing number of visitors, the Fort Fisher Visitors Center site required major expansion. The existing onsite structure was demolished to accommodate the new visitors center, an Underwater Archaeology Building, and the recreation of historic monuments.

The new two-story facility includes offices and flexible workspaces, permanent and rotating exhibits, a gift shop, orientation facilities, multipurpose areas, a fully equipped catering kitchen, as well as numerous comfortable viewing and seating spaces.

35 North provided cost estimating services throughout this project, which was divided into three phases and completed in May 2024. The Fort Fisher Visitors Center and Underwater Archaeology Building re-opened to the public in October 2024.
